It is usually just the requirements of the second item. i.e. having the necessary levels to equip the new frame/barrier. To make any combination, just equip the main item in your inventory, and use the second item. A sound and a flash will occur and your new item will appear in your inventory. Some notes about the new item: If it is a weapon, the new item will have the same Photon Attributes as the previous weapon. If the weapon has a special attack (like Hell, Geist, Fire), it will not carry over to the new weapon. If you try to combine an item with another, and you don't have the USE option, then you have not fulfilled the requirements for the merge.
