| Issue #31 - What do you do when the servers go down?!
In the last two editions of Ragol.co.uk's great Hunters Gazette, we've shown you around the world of Phantasy Star Online, in a more, literal sense. This time we finish on the theme, by showing you SEGA's other territory that PSO has made it's mark on... What else could possibly be made? |
There are only so many things you can do based on one video game... or so you would believe. SEGA on the other hand, think otherwise, and play their hand at everything that can possibly be thrown in their direction! Phantasy Star Online has gone way past the video game now, as you've previously seen, with cuddley toys, t-shirts, CD's, magazines, cartoons, calendars... but, there's still something out there that the average Japanese PSO nutter hasn't thought about buying into yet. It's a C.A.R.D. Revolution... Literally! |
Playing cards... now that's creative and something that anyone can use in their hour of darkness, when the PSO servers are offline, and the gamer has nothing to play with after losing their only possible fix. Sure they've got cuddley toys, CD's, and t-shirts, but they won't keep you occupied when your SEGA Dreamcast has gone inactive. Now you can get your PSO addiction running where-ever you are, with the Phantasy Star Online Playing Cards!
Each card bares its own character, enemy, and boss, in sets of hearts, spades, clubs, and diamonds, as you'd expect from the everyday pack. On the back, the Phantasy Star Online artwork you're more then accustomed to seeing.
To set the record straight however, these cards weren't just for the Japanese. I remember the time 2 years ago just after Phantasy Star Online made it's impact on the Nintendo Gamecube, when SEGA of Europe for instance gave away many many packs of these playing cards to the owners of a Hunters License at the time who filled out a short questionnaire over at PlaySEGA.com. I got mine, so na-na-na-na-naa! If games of Solitare in your hours of darkness aren't your ways of having fun by yourself and your nice lady friends are busy with something else so there's no-one to play Strip Poker with, then you might be looking elsewhere to keep your PSO fix happy. With the initial figures being so successful as far as sales go, SEGA went one better and re-released the figurines as a kind of Warhammer type scenario, where you buy the figures, and then paint them how you want them to appear! Choose your own coloured costume, as long as you've got a steady hand...

After that, SEGA released more complex figurines, figurines you could put together yourself, and also decide what weapon they hold, through the use of teeny tiny little screws and screwdrivers and other likewise tools and goods.
